Composite Resins
Giving Your Smile Renewed Health & Strength
Many people are self-conscious about their smiles because their teeth
are decayed, disfigured or discolored due to age, heredity or lifestyle
habits. In many such cases, we can apply composite resins to restore these
teeth to a healthy, strong, white smile. A composite resin is a silicon
dioxide-filled tooth-colored plastic mixture used by dentists for improving
teeth both structurally and cosmetically. Such 'white fillings' are an
excellent solution for highly visible areas of the mouth. Of course, if
fillings are required in less visible areas of the mouth, we continue
to recommend traditional silver fillings.
Easy to Apply
Generally, resin placement requires four simple steps: preparation, layering,
shaping, and polishing. First, Dr. Jeppson prepares the teeth to be filled:
drilling out any decayed area, and cleaning all surfaces with a specialized
cleaning agent. Next, he layers the composite onto the teeth, using a
special light to harden each layer. When the layering process is complete,
Dr. Jeppson carefully shapes the composite to fit the tooth in the same
manner as the original dentition. Finally, he polishes it to prevent staining
and early wear. The entire, simple process may require about 10 to 20
minutes more than what's needed to place a traditional silver filling,
depending on the size of the filling and location of the composite.
Easy to Appreciate
There are several advantages to the patient in receiving composite resins
as opposed to traditional silver fillings. First, Dr. Jeppson is an expert
craftsman, able to precisely blend composite shades and shapes that match
the original teeth nearly perfectly. Further, the bond formed between
the tooth and the composite supports the remaining tooth structure, preventing
breakage and providing insulation against temperature changes. Finally,
average- and small-sized composites have been shown to last as long as
silver fillings--seven to ten years.
Easy to Live With
You'll typically find that your new smile is enjoyable and simple to
care for. There are a few things to keep in mind, however. Infrequently,
patients experience temporary post-placement sensitivity after receiving
their composite(s). In some cases, the composite shade may also darken
slightly from tea, coffee or other staining types of foods and beverages.
However, if you anticipate this happening, Dr. Jeppson can prevent it
by placing a clear plastic coating over the composite. A final consideration
may be cost: composites typically run one-and-a-half to two times the
price of a traditional silver filling, with insurance covering up to the
price of the silver filling and the patient paying the difference. However,
insurance companies will likely increase coverage as composites continue
to improve.
